Fatshimetrie, September 21, 2024 – The issue of education in the Democratic Republic of Congo is at the heart of the concerns of the government led by President Félix Tshisekedi. During the recent meeting of the Council of Ministers, an important point was discussed: the continuation of free primary education.
President Tshisekedi stressed the importance of maintaining free primary education in order to improve not only students’ accessibility to school, but also the quality of education and school governance. He insisted that while free education has enabled many children to access education, it must be accompanied by conditions conducive to good learning.
During his visit to primary schools after the start of the school year, the Head of State noted that the viability of some schools remains a challenge. He listed several essential criteria for the proper functioning of a school, such as the size of classrooms, the number of students per class and the equipment of benches.
The government was called upon to redouble its efforts to ensure the viability of schools and provide students with an optimal study environment. The Minister of National Education was tasked with activating inspectors to ensure compliance with standards in schools before they open.
Furthermore, President Tshisekedi stressed the urgency of improving the governance of the higher education sector. He deplored the proliferation of higher education institutions that do not meet quality and technical viability standards, thus compromising the training of students and the contribution of this sector to the country’s development.
It is therefore imperative to put an end to this situation by ensuring the strict application of the texts in force, in particular the framework law on national education. Cleaning up the education sector, both at the primary and higher levels, is essential to ensure quality education and contribute effectively to the country’s development.
In conclusion, education remains an essential pillar of national development, and President Tshisekedi has committed to working to improve the quality of education at all levels, from kindergarten to university. Continuing to make primary education free and cleaning up the higher education sector are priorities for the Congolese government in its quest for quality education for all.
