The Chairman of the Committee, Professor Attahiru Jega, recently announced that the 23-member Livestock Sector Transformation Committee had submitted a report to President Bola Tinubu in Abuja.
At a press conference at the State House, Jega disclosed that the Committee, which was inaugurated on July 9, had produced an inception report with comprehensive recommendations on the transformation of the livestock sector.
Among the Committee’s recommendations was that free-range and ranching could co-exist until adequate awareness and infrastructure were put in place for the full adoption of ranching.
The Committee also made recommendations on how to address some of the challenges facing the livestock sector.
The President expressed his full support to the Committee and encouraged it to lead the process of implementing the recommendations with the new ministry responsible for monitoring the process. The Professor also highlighted that the Committee had provided detailed guidelines on the establishment of the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development.
He stressed the importance of targeted implementation of the recommendations, as well as periodic assessments to identify the need for reorientation or strengthening of efforts in achieving the recommendations.
The Professor said the report contained specific recommendations on developing the livestock sector value chain to harness its potential to drive economic growth and development.
He added that the recommendations included measures to create jobs, ensure not only food security but also food safety, nutrition, and start exporting many products associated with the sector.
The Committee’s report addressed 12 terms of reference and formulated 22 objectives for the reform of the livestock sector. He also identified 3,146 achievable target indicators for the improvement of the sector.
By pursuing and implementing these recommendations, Prof. Jega said that remarkable improvements could be seen in all aspects of the livestock sector within a reasonable time frame, with a maximum of 10 years.
In conclusion, the presentation of this inception report to President Bola Tinubu paves the way for significant changes in the livestock sector, with positive prospects for the economy, employment and overall development of the country.
