Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State recently broke ground for the upgrading of Ibadan Airport, now renamed Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport, to international standards. The strategic move is aimed at transforming Oyo State into a major regional economic hub. The project’s groundbreaking ceremony, held at the airport premises, will entail an initial investment of N41 billion for the first phase of the upgrade.
Since 2019, Governor Makinde’s administration has been committed to upgrading the airport, with a clear objective of making Ibadan a regional business hub in the South-West zone of Nigeria. The governor stressed that their real fight is against poverty, not the poor. The modernization of SLA Airport is expected to improve air travel operations and provide a reliable transport network for business and leisure travelers, thereby positioning Oyo State on the path to economic growth and development.
In his address, Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State, who was a special guest at the event, described Governor Makinde as a “true developer of development projects”.
This bold initiative is also expected to attract both domestic and foreign investment into the region, thereby boosting the local economy and reinforcing Oyo State’s reputation as a leading business destination in the region. By transforming Ibadan Airport into a modern and efficient air hub, the government is demonstrating its commitment to the sustainable economic development of the region.
In conclusion, Governor Seyi Makinde’s decision to upgrade Ibadan Airport is of significant importance to the economic future of Oyo State and the surrounding region. This initiative is a testament to his vision and commitment to the transformation and progress of the region, making Oyo State a destination of choice for investors and travellers from all over the world.
