Promoting the equitable participation of women in security forces in the DRC

Fatshimetrie, September 18, 2024 – The issue of equitable representation of women in the security forces in the Democratic Republic of Congo was at the heart of a conference organized this Wednesday in Kinshasa, in partnership between the Ministry of Gender and MONUSCO. The recommendations resulting from this event highlight the urgent need to include more women in these institutions in order to ensure equitable participation and promote lasting peace.

Ms. Faida Mwangilwa, Gender Expert and Coordinator of the Advisory Group, stressed the importance of taking into consideration the experience of women in security sector reform. This approach aims not only to promote equitable representation, but also to encourage women to take ownership of reform initiatives for a positive impact in the country.

The recommendations made at the conference emphasize improving the participation of women in the main security forces such as the FARDC, PNC, DGM, ANR, and others. It is essential to break stereotypes and raise awareness among women to integrate these areas for greater diversity and increased effectiveness in promoting peace and security.

The representative of the Minister of Gender, Family and Children, Ms. Annie Matundu Mbambi, affirmed the government’s commitment to increasing the number of women in the security sector in order to reduce gender inequalities in the DRC. This initiative is part of a broader dynamic aimed at promoting gender parity in all areas, in accordance with the resolutions of the United Nations Council.

Furthermore, the representative of MONUSCO, Uju Nwobi, recalled the importance of international resolutions that encourage the participation of women in the security forces. Despite a current low percentage of women in these institutions in the DRC, it is essential to combat the barriers and foster a more inclusive and egalitarian society.

In conclusion, it is crucial to implement concrete measures to ensure equitable representation of women in the security forces in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This will not only contribute to strengthening peace and security in the country, but also to promoting gender equality and providing equitable opportunities to all Congolese women citizens.
