The renovation work on the runway at Bipemba Airport in Mbuji-Mayi, in the Kasai-Oriental province of the Democratic Republic of Congo, is about to begin. This major announcement was made by Romain Tshinyama, provincial commander of the Régie des Voies Aériennes (RVA) of the locality, thus giving new life to the airport infrastructure of the region.
The recent acquisition of a milling machine, a state-of-the-art equipment for leveling surfaces, made it possible to launch the work. This major project will extend over a distance of approximately 2,000 meters from the runway, thus offering a new perspective for air traffic in Mbuji-Mayi.
This renovation work will impact flight schedules to this destination. Indeed, to carry out the operations successfully, it is planned that flights will be reorganized to allow the smooth running of the work. “Currently, the machine is in place, so we can start work from this Friday until Sunday. In the following weeks, we will plan the work from Thursday to Sunday, with flights scheduled from Monday to Wednesday,” said the RVA commander in Mbuji-Mayi.
This work will consist of removing the existing layer of the landing strip, laid since 1974, and then covering it with a new layer of approximately 30 cm thick, capable of safely accommodating aircraft. This modernization of Bipemba airport will be a major asset for the development and connectivity of the region, offering airport infrastructure that complies with international standards.
Beyond this renovation work, this project is part of a broader vision aimed at strengthening the attractiveness of Mbuji-Mayi as a regional airport platform. It will thus contribute to stimulating the local economy and promoting trade and tourism, propelling the city towards new horizons of development.
In conclusion, the renovation work on the runway at Bipemba Airport in Mbuji-Mayi represents a crucial step in the modernization of the region’s airport infrastructure. This promising project paves the way for a more dynamic and prosperous future for Mbuji-Mayi, strengthening its position as a major economic and commercial hub in the Kasaï-Oriental region.
