Strengthening Commitment to Peace in the Democratic Republic of Congo: United Nations Actions Highlighted

Fatshimetrie, 17 September 2024 (ACP).- The commitment of the United Nations to the peace process in the Democratic Republic of Congo was reaffirmed during a meeting between the Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for the Great Lakes Region and the Coordinator of the National Monitoring Mechanism of the Addis Ababa Agreement.

The Special Envoy, Xia Huang, stressed during this exchange in Kinshasa that his objective was to support in a stronger and more substantial way the efforts of regional countries, in particular the Luanda process. He also highlighted the mobilization of the various actors to promote peace and stability in the region.

In collaboration with Professor Alphonse Ntumba Luaba Lumu, Coordinator of the National Monitoring Mechanism of the Addis Ababa Agreement, Mr. Huang reviewed recent political and diplomatic progress, while considering the next steps to come in the coming months. The objective is to quickly resolve the current tensions and find lasting solutions to address the root causes of instability and insecurity that have affected the Great Lakes region for several decades.

Furthermore, the Coordinator of the National Monitoring Mechanism stressed the importance of raising awareness among the international community about the situation in the DRC. He expressed confidence in a positive outcome to the current crisis in the east of the country, thanks to the strong mobilization of the Congolese authorities and the support of the population.

He also highlighted the role of the FDLR rebel movement in the Democratic Republic of Congo, stressing that it is used as a pretext by Rwanda to justify its continued aggression in the region. This analysis highlights the complex issues and challenges to be addressed in order to achieve lasting peace in the Great Lakes Region.

In conclusion, it is essential that the international community, in coordination with local actors, intensify its efforts to resolve the persistent conflicts in the region. The support of the United Nations is a key element in fostering a constructive and lasting dialogue with a view to guaranteeing the long-awaited peace and stability in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
