Former Governor Responds to EFCC Invitation: What Are Next Steps?

Former Governor Bello today responded to the EFCC’s invitation over alleged financial frauds. Despite the summons, officials of the anti-graft agency failed to question the former governor during his visit. A statement by his Chief of Staff, Ohiare Michael, clarified the situation by saying that Bello was informed by the commission’s agents that he could leave freely. The move raises questions about the next steps in the matter.

It is important to note that Bello took the decision to surrender to the EFCC after extensive consultations with his family, legal team and political allies. His priority is to ensure that his fundamental rights are respected and that due process is followed.

According to the Director, the matter has already been heard by a competent court and Bello has been represented at every hearing by his lawyers. He says the former governor has nothing to hide and responded to the EFCC’s invitation to clear his name. His cooperation is in line with his strong belief in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s sustainable economic development initiatives and his support for the fight against corruption in Nigeria.

It is noteworthy that Bello was the first governor of Kogi State to put in place an anti-corruption mechanism to fight corruption and ensure that state resources benefit its citizens.

Bello’s move was supported by various influential personalities who accompanied him to the EFCC headquarters. The transparency of his approach and his commitment to the fight against corruption demonstrate his willingness to contribute to the integrity and development of Nigeria.
