Construction of a state-of-the-art electrical transformer station in Mugunga: a major step forward for electricity in the Democratic Republic of Congo

Fatshimétrie, September 18, 2024 – A new major breakthrough in the electricity sector is looming in the Democratic Republic of Congo, with the construction of a state-of-the-art electrical transformer station in Mugunga, in the Karisimbi commune in Goma, North Kivu province. This major project, with a capacity of 93.8 Megavar, is being carried out by the National Electricity Company (Snel), demonstrating the country’s commitment to strengthening its energy infrastructure.

The establishment of this new transformer station is of major strategic importance, as it will allow an efficient interconnection in Mugunga. This new infrastructure, financed by a German bank, aims to significantly improve electricity supply in the region, while promoting closer regional integration by enabling energy exchanges with neighboring countries.

Project Supervisor, Mr. Gérard Kamo Kamo, highlights the positive impact that this transformer station will have on the socio-economic conditions of the population of Goma and the Central African region as a whole. By promoting more reliable access to electricity, this infrastructure will help boost the economic and social development of the region, creating new opportunities for residents.

The visit of the military governor of North Kivu, General Peter Cirimwami, to the construction site is a testament to the importance given by local authorities to this project. Highlighting the essential role of electrical energy in the development of society, the governor highlighted the positive benefits expected for the local population, particularly in terms of improved public lighting and enhanced security.

With an estimated construction time of 16 months, this project is part of a broader regional electricity interconnection program, offering opportunities for more efficient and lower-cost energy exchange. This initiative is expected not only to meet the region’s growing electricity needs, but also to strengthen energy cooperation ties between neighboring countries, benefiting consumers and the regional economy as a whole.

In conclusion, the new Mugunga transformer station represents a significant step towards a more sustainable and inclusive energy future for the North Kivu region. Its positive impact on the daily lives of residents, as well as on regional economic development, suggests promising prospects for the electricity sector in the Democratic Republic of Congo and beyond.
