Fatshimétrie, September 16, 2024 (FT).- The support provided by the United Nations to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) within the framework of the Luanda process was at the heart of discussions between the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs of the DRC and a UN delegation.
During this meeting, Jean-Pierre Lacroix, UN Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping, stressed MONUSCO’s commitment to supporting the DRC both diplomatically and operationally. He stressed the importance of the peace efforts deployed under the facilitation of Angola and expressed the willingness of the United Nations to continue to support the country on this path.
The discussions also addressed the issue of the gradual disengagement of MONUSCO, particularly in South Kivu, and the preparation of the next steps in consultation with the Congolese authorities. Jean-Pierre Lacroix stressed the need for a responsible and gradual disengagement, taking into account the situation on the ground and the objectives of the roadmap in the DRC.
The arrival in Kinshasa of the UN Deputy Secretary-General marks the beginning of a five-day official visit, during which he will meet with President Félix Tshisekedi, Prime Minister Judith Suminwa, members of the government, political actors and representatives of civil society. The objective of these meetings is to strengthen the Luanda process with a view to establishing lasting peace in the DRC.
In the coming days, Jean-Pierre Lacroix will also travel to North Kivu and Ituri to assess the latest developments and engage with provincial authorities, the United Nations, local communities, civil society organizations and local actors. He will also meet with the leaders of the Southern African Development Community Mission (SAMIDRC) in the DRC, within the framework of Security Council Resolution 2746 and MONUSCO’s support for regional initiatives.
This visit marks a strong commitment by the international community to peace and stability in the DRC, and demonstrates the willingness of the United Nations to continue supporting the country in its efforts to achieve lasting and inclusive peace.
