The controversial detention of Dr. Abubakar Alkali and the challenge of #EndBadGovernance protesters in Nigeria

The #EndBadGovernance movement continues to shake Nigeria and draw attention to the persistent problems of bad governance in the country. While the courts have granted bail to 10 protesters, a new case has emerged that has captivated public opinion. Indeed, the protesters’ lawyer, Mr. Deji Adeyanju, has raised the alarm over the fate of Dr. Abubakar Alkali, a distinguished lecturer at the Faculty of Petroleum and Gas Engineering, Baze University.

According to information provided by Adeyanju, Dr. Abubakar Alkali has been arrested and detained by the Department of State Security (DSS) for the past three weeks for his alleged support for the #EndBadGovernance protests. A troubling and worrying situation that raises questions about freedom of expression and the right to peaceful protest.

Beyond this particular case, Adeyanju also drew attention to the situation of 115 other protesters currently incarcerated at Kuje Prison without bail. He also noted that over 1,000 people across the country were awaiting bail.

It is crucial to recall that the arrest and prosecution of peaceful protesters is against the constitutional principles of freedom of expression and assembly. The supporters of the #EndBadGovernance movement are vehemently calling for the unconditional release of all detained protesters.

This situation raises critical questions about the fundamental rights of citizens and the need for the government to ensure a democratic space where dissenting voices can freely express themselves. Furthermore, it highlights the urgent need for reforms and the fight against corruption and bad governance that continue to plague the country’s development.

In conclusion, it is imperative to defend the rights of peaceful protesters and promote constructive dialogue to advance citizens’ legitimate demands for more transparent and accountable governance. Authorities must act in accordance with democratic principles and the rule of law to ensure a better Nigeria for all its citizens.
