Security of internally displaced persons in Goma: Urgent action needed to end the violence

Fatshimetrie, September 15, 2024 – The situation of internally displaced persons in the Goma sites is increasingly worrying, with a worrying increase in cases of assassinations. The inhabitants of the IDP camps are increasingly exposed to the actions of armed individuals who sow terror and violence in these communities already tested by the horrors of war.

A recent tragic incident in the site for war displaced persons named Rego highlighted this dark reality. A young man of only 21 years old, recently married and working as a motorcyclist, was the victim of a deadly attack while returning home. This cowardly crime, perpetrated by unidentified individuals, cost the life of this young man, leaving behind a young widow and a now orphaned child.

The head of the Lac-vert neighborhood, Mr. Dedesi Mitima, testifies to the growing violence raging in these IDP sites. He deplores not only the assassinations, but also the sexual violence that particularly affects women fleeing armed conflicts in the region. He calls for increased security at these sites, in order to best protect these vulnerable populations who have already suffered so much.

It is imperative to act quickly to put an end to this spiral of violence affecting the internally displaced persons of Goma. The competent authorities must redouble their efforts to identify and bring to justice the perpetrators of these heinous acts. Similarly, close collaboration between the security forces and local communities is essential to unmask the malicious individuals who seek to sow terror.

It is also crucial to encourage vigilance within the displacement sites, so that residents can report any suspicious behavior and help strengthen the security of their community. Solidarity and mutual assistance are key elements in the fight against the insecurity that threatens these already fragile populations.

Ultimately, the protection of internally displaced persons must be an absolute priority for local and national authorities. Every life matters, and it is our collective duty to ensure the safety and dignity of those who have been forced to flee their homes due to armed conflict. It is time to end this wave of violence and work together towards a safer and more peaceful future for all.
