DRC Teachers Continue Strike for Better Pay

Fatshimetrie: DRC Teachers Continue Their Strike for Better Remuneration

The educational scene in the Democratic Republic of Congo remains plunged into uncertainty as the Synergy of Teachers’ Unions recently decided to extend the strike they joined until the convening of work related to the national remuneration policy. This decision, taken at the Extraordinary General Assembly held in Kinshasa, highlights the deep discontent of education professionals with the lack of progress in improving their working conditions and remuneration.

Since the beginning of the 2024-2025 school year, several schools have not resumed their activities due to the teachers’ strike. The latter are demanding that the Government fulfill the commitments made to improve their living and working conditions. Synergie spokesperson Jean-Bosco Puna expressed the profession’s dismay at the lack of political will needed to respond to these legitimate demands.

Education is the foundation on which any enlightened and prosperous society rests, and teachers play a crucial role in the training and development of future generations. It is essential to recognize the value of their work and ensure that they have the resources and recognition they deserve. Teachers in the DRC are not asking for the impossible, but simply for equal pay and decent working conditions that demonstrate respect for the teaching profession.

The extension of the strike underlines the determination of teachers to make their voices heard and to highlight the challenges they face on a daily basis. It is time for the Government to enter into a constructive dialogue with teachers’ representatives in order to find lasting solutions that will benefit the entire education community.

In these uncertain times, when education is more crucial than ever for the future of the DRC, it is imperative to support and value those who dedicate their lives to educating future generations. Teachers deserve not only our respect, but also working conditions worthy of their noble and essential mission. It is time to act, to recognize their value and to ensure that education remains a national priority, for the good of all.
