In the early hours of Tuesday, September 10, 2024, Maiduguri metropolis was hit by torrential rains and flash floods following the failure of the Alau Dam in the vicinity of Konduga Local Government Area. According to reports, over 40% of Maiduguri metropolis was submerged in water, leading to devastating consequences for its residents.

Lives were lost, and over 400,000 people were forced to flee their homes due to the natural disaster. The rising waters caused extensive material damage, estimated at millions of naira. Key infrastructure such as banks, schools, and even part of an old correctional facility were seriously damaged. Authorities had to transfer many inmates to the new Maiduguri Maximum Security Prison.

Security sources confirmed the situation, expressing concerns about the possible escape of detainees, including suspected Boko Haram members. Governor Zulum expressed concern about the possibility in an interview with BBC Hausa on Saturday, September 14, 2024. He highlighted the efforts of the Borno State government in rehabilitating repentant Boko Haram members, but also acknowledged that the situation was worrying.

Governor Zulum stressed the gravity of the situation, recalling past tragedies and the ongoing struggle against insecurity in the region. He stressed the urgent need for support for flood victims and steps to be taken to ensure their safety and protection during this difficult time.
