Fight against delinquency in Kinshasa: a question of public security

Fatshimetrie, September 12, 2024 – The city of Kinshasa was shaken by a tragic event last Thursday, when a young offender was lynched by residents of the Yolo-Sud neighborhood, located in the heart of the Kalamu commune. According to information provided by a police source, this incident took place in the early hours of the morning, when six young offenders chased women bread sellers on their way to the bakery for their orders.

In a disturbing account, it is reported that five of the offenders managed to escape, but one of them, heading towards Mokaria Avenue, was caught by angry residents and lost his life. This situation echoes another similar incident that occurred recently in the direction of Kwilu, where young delinquents robbed a young man on his way to do his shopping, as well as an incident threatening the tranquility of a hospital center, where patients were victims of burglary.

Despite the efforts of the authorities to ensure the safety of citizens, violence persists in other neighborhoods of Kinshasa. On the night of Sunday 8 to Monday 9 September, two criminals were killed during a fight between gangs in the “Muana Tunu” neighborhood located in the commune of Selembao. Senior Commissioner Amos Kionge, in charge of a sub-police station in Selembao, deplored these recurring criminal acts perpetrated by unscrupulous individuals, endangering the tranquility of residents.

These tragic events highlight the need for increased action by the authorities to combat delinquency and ensure the safety of citizens. Preventive and repressive measures must be put in place to deter malicious individuals and protect the well-being of the population. The commitment of law enforcement and collaboration with the community are essential to counter this scourge and ensure a safe and peaceful environment for all.
