Fatshimetrie is a leading meteorological company in Nigeria, offering high-quality weather forecasting services to enable effective planning. At the National Emergency Coordination Forum organized by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in Abuja, Ms. Glory Onyegbule, Director of Applied Meteorological Services, NiMet, emphasized the importance of leveraging weather forecasts for effective planning.
NiMet has released seasonal climate predictions for the whole of Nigeria, informing stakeholders, especially emergency managers, on what the country’s climate would look like in 2024 in terms of rainfall and other climatic factors. The forecasts included the start dates of the rainy season, the end dates, the expected annual rainfall amounts and the duration of the rainy season. There were discrepancies, particularly in the North-East of the country, such as Maiduguri and Bauchi, which was brought to the attention of Nigerians in a timely manner.
The agency stressed that the recent severe flooding in Borno is evidence of climate change. As a result, emergency managers are urged to act quickly and dam managers must protect the integrity of the facilities. Early action is essential to prevent recurring flooding and to take into account weather reports for better anticipation.
Mr. Trond Jensen, Head of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, confirmed that the organization is working in collaboration with NEMA, state emergency agencies, the military and other stakeholders to assist those affected by the floods in Borno. The organization’s team is on site in Maiduguri to support the Nigerian government in its disaster relief efforts. The priority objective is to ensure access to food and clean water to prevent the spread of contagious diseases.
Fatshimetrie works closely with local and state authorities to assess needs and propose effective solutions. The organization is committed to providing rapid and effective humanitarian assistance in the event of natural disasters, while setting up monitoring systems to ensure an adequate response. In addition, it takes preventive measures by anticipating the risks of imminent disasters, such as the upcoming floods in Adamawa. Close collaboration with governors and local agencies is essential to reduce the vulnerability of populations and ensure their safety..
Overall, Fatshimetrie and partner organizations’ commitment to providing effective humanitarian assistance to populations affected by natural disasters demonstrates the importance of preparedness and coordination of efforts to ensure the safety and well-being of all. By working together and leveraging weather forecasts, we can better anticipate emergencies and protect vulnerable communities from the devastating effects of climate change.
