The logistical challenges of the fight against Mpox in the DRC: a crucial issue

Kinshasa, September 12, 2024 – The issue of logistics in the fight against Mpox in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has taken on paramount importance within the medical community. It was during the “Congolese Challenges” festival that experts expressed their concerns and the obstacles encountered in the management of this viral disease.

Dr. Yasmine Onya, an expert at the National Program for the Fight against Mpox and Viral Hemorrhagic Fevers, highlighted the major challenges related to logistics. Indeed, access to certain remote regions of the DRC to ensure an effective response is hampered by logistical problems, which contributes to the spread of the disease.

In addition to the logistical challenges, Dr. Onya also highlighted the importance of awareness and prevention. With the arrival of the first vaccines, it is essential to inform and sensitize the population on the importance of vaccination to counter Mpox. Communication and education play a key role in preventing the disease.

The current situation in the DRC is alarming, with a resurgence of Mpox cases. In 2023, cases were recorded in Kinshasa, and the National Program for the Control of Mpox and Viral Hemorrhagic Fevers has implemented measures to care for patients and stem the spread of the disease.

According to figures provided by the PNLMPOX-FHV, the number of suspected cases of Mpox since the beginning of 2024 is 21,153, with 692 deaths. The lethality of the disease is estimated at 3.2%, while the number of confirmed cases over the same period is 5,002, with a positivity of 48.7%.

Faced with this urgent situation, Dr. Onya calls for the mobilization of all to fight against Mpox. It is crucial that each individual takes responsibility and mobilizes to put an end to this health threat to the Congolese population.

In conclusion, the fight against Mpox in the DRC requires effective coordination, concerted efforts and increased awareness. It is imperative to overcome logistical challenges, strengthen prevention and mobilize the whole of society to eradicate this viral disease.
