Title: Case of Alleged Assault on Visually Impaired Woman by Retired Judge Rocks Zaria
Recently, the city of Zaria witnessed a shocking incident involving a former Sharia High Court judge, Mahmud Shehu, who was accused of assaulting a visually impaired woman. The story, which surfaced during a hearing at the Zaria Magistrate’s Court, sparked outrage and raised questions about justice and the rights of vulnerable people.
According to the chargesheet filed by Inspector Adamu Abubakar, the incident allegedly took place on September 6 at Tudun-Jukun, Zaria, where the complainant, Garba Adda’u, filed a complaint against Mahmud Shehu for trespassing and assault. The charges levelled against the former judge are serious and contrary to the laws of Kaduna State.
The prosecution’s account states that Mahmud Shehu allegedly entered the Garba Adda’u compound, locked the gate and assaulted the visually impaired woman and her two helpers with an umbrella. The viciousness of the attack resulted in injuries to the visually impaired woman, who had to be rushed to Tudun Wada Community Health Centre for medical attention.
During the hearing, Mahmud Shehu pleaded not guilty to the charges against him. His lawyer, Mr. SM Abubakar, applied for bail for his client, but the prosecutor objected, saying that the complainant and the accused resided in the same neighbourhood, which could threaten the latter’s safety.
After deliberation, Magistrate Lukman Sidi granted Mahmud Shehu bail in the amount of N50,000, subject to the condition of a surety possessing an international passport and residing within the jurisdiction of the court. The case was adjourned until 8 October to allow for a thorough review of the facts and a fair conclusion.
This case highlights the importance of protecting the rights of vulnerable people and highlights the responsibility of the judiciary to ensure fairness and justice for all. As a society, it is crucial to condemn any act of violence and hold those responsible accountable before the law. This case should not be taken lightly and demonstrates the need to promote a respectful and safe environment for all citizens.
