Internal sources describe a climate of total disorganization and extreme tension, where the doors damaged during the recent riots have still not been repaired, allowing the inmates to move around freely and accentuating the feeling of insecurity.
The Kuluna and other inmates considered dangerous roam without restriction, creating an environment conducive to conflicts and the escalation of violence. Despite the deployment of military forces to restore order, the situation seems to escape the control of the authorities, the warning shots adding a climate of fear and uncertainty among the prisoners.
Inside Makala, life seems suspended, frozen in a state of dilapidation and destitution. Living conditions are deplorable, with failing infrastructure, a shortage of water and food, clogged toilets and waste accumulating in corridors that have become dark and silent. Banned visits and the looting of food reserves have plunged some detainees into extreme precariousness, aggravated by the lack of electricity to prepare meals.
Hygiene is a real problem, compromising the health of detainees who find themselves confined in unsanitary conditions, without the possibility of washing or disposing of waste. This precarious situation threatens the physical and mental health of prisoners, amplifying a feeling of despair and abandonment.
Faced with this humanitarian crisis, Prime Minister Judith Suminwa Tuluka took the decision to urgently return to Kinshasa to supervise operations and coordinate relief efforts. A provisional assessment indicates significant losses, with an alarming number of deaths, injuries and considerable material damage.
