Persistent insecurity in eastern DRC: a major challenge for human rights

Fatshimetrie, the leading media outlet for in-depth analysis of current events, recently addressed the burning issue of persistent insecurity in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. During the pre-session of the Universal Periodic Review in Geneva, international actors focused on this region plagued by armed conflict and human rights violations.

Paul Nsapu, the eminent president of the National Human Rights Commission of the DRC, stressed the crucial importance of this discussion. He highlighted the actions of Rwanda and Uganda, as well as their local allies, such as the M23 and the Congo River Alliance (AFC), which continue to sow chaos and violence in this already scarred region.

During his intervention, Paul Nsapu also highlighted the constructive recommendations made by the CNDH to improve the disastrous situation in the eastern part of the country. He stressed the need to preserve the sovereignty of the DRC and to guarantee the security and fundamental rights of its population.

Furthermore, the emphasis was placed on the progress made through the implementation of the recommendations of the previous UPR cycle in 2019. The CNDH-DRC delegation, represented by key members such as Véronique Ngongo and René Kabala, committed to continuing these efforts during the next cycle of the Universal Periodic Review in September.

The Universal Periodic Review, a unique United Nations human rights monitoring mechanism, provides a valuable opportunity for Member States to be accountable and improve on fundamental rights. The success of this process can not only strengthen the social and political situation of a country, but also help attract investments that are beneficial for its development.

Thus, through the frank and constructive discussions of the UPR pre-session in Geneva, the international community committed to supporting the DRC in its quest for stability, peace and respect for human rights in the east of the country. Fatshimetrie will continue to closely monitor this crucial development for the region and for the entire Congolese population, highlighting the issues and challenges to be met in order to build a better future.
