On this day marked by the health emergency, renowned scientists from the University of Lubumbashi met to discuss ways to respond to the Mpox epidemic that threatens the population of Haut-Katanga. Under the captivating theme of “Mpox epidemic in Haut-Katanga: In search of solutions”, Professor Gilbert Kishiba Fitula, Rector of Unilu, opened the discussions by emphasizing the crucial importance of this health crisis, described as major by the WHO.
Faced with this critical situation, scientists were reiterated their essential role in finding scientific ways and means to counter this devastating epidemic. Professor Kishiba eloquently praised the commitment of researchers in the search for a solution to this scourge and expressed the hope that this clinical morning would be the first step towards a thorough understanding of the epidemic and effective strategies to put an end to it.
One of the highlights of this meeting was the proposal of virologist Michel Ekwalanga Balaka, who suggested to the Ministry of Health to grant the University of Lubumbashi the possibility of implementing the Mpox Management Protocol, developed by its researchers. This intervention underlines the importance of collaboration between academic institutions and health authorities to effectively combat epidemics.
Furthermore, the health authorities called on the population to be vigilant and to respect precautionary measures to protect themselves against Mpox. Despite the absence of confirmed cases in the region so far, it is essential to remain alert and cooperate with the authorities to stem the spread of this potentially devastating disease.
Ultimately, this clinical morning organized by the Faculty of Medicine of Unilu highlighted the importance of scientific research in the fight against epidemics and underlined the urgency of concerted action to protect the health of the population of Haut-Katanga. By joining forces and expertise, scientists and policy makers will be able to find innovative solutions to prevent and combat epidemics in a spirit of solidarity and commitment to public health.
