Fatshimetrie, August 29, 2024 – Postpartum depression in women after childbirth is a crucial topic that profoundly affects human development. At a conference organized by the Babel International network in Kinshasa, experts highlighted the devastating impact of maternal depression on the mental health of mothers and the well-being of babies.
Dr. Daniel Okitundu, a physician emeritus at the Cliniques Universitaires de Kinshasa, stressed the importance of recognizing and treating depression in pregnant women and new mothers. The results of a study conducted in Kinshasa revealed that nearly 93% of women faced depressive episodes, with direct repercussions on their babies. Indeed, 69.2% of infants showed signs of emotional distress, influenced by their mother’s mental state.
The postpartum period, often marked by what is known as the “baby blues”, is a delicate time when mothers can feel overwhelmed and vulnerable. In the most severe cases, the lack of support and supervision can lead to full-blown postpartum depression, with harmful consequences on the maternal bond and the development of the child.
It is essential to raise awareness among pregnant women and families of the importance of preventing and treating maternal depression. The experience and support of other women, especially those who have already experienced motherhood, can play a crucial role in the emotional well-being of new mothers.
Faced with this alarming observation, it is imperative that government authorities take concrete measures to set up support and follow-up programs for pregnant women and new mothers struggling with depression. Investing in the mental health of mothers and babies is a guarantee of sustainable human development and well-being for society as a whole.
Ultimately, postpartum depression must no longer be a taboo but a public health priority. It is time to break the silence and implement concrete solutions to support women in their motherhood journey, thus ensuring a more peaceful and fulfilling future for future generations.
