Fatshimétrie, August 28, 2024 – The breastfeeding capital: Lubumbashi, enthusiastically welcomed the launch of World Breastfeeding Week (WBW) under the inspiring theme “Reducing Inequalities, Supporting Breastfeeding for All”. This initiative was welcomed by leading personalities, highlighting the importance of this practice for the health and well-being of infants.
The Provincial Minister of Health of Haut-Katanga, Dr. Joseph N’sambi Bulanda, stressed that breastfeeding can play a crucial role in reducing social inequalities. He encouraged working women to breastfeed while practicing their profession, stressing that Congolese law protects this fundamental right. In addition, he highlighted the government’s commitment to maternal health, with President Félix Tshisekedi’s clear vision for universal health coverage and free maternity services.
Nutrition partners, represented by Mr. Jean de Dieu Ilunga of UNICEF, highlighted the undeniable benefits of exclusive breastfeeding for infants aged 0 to 6 months, as well as the continuation of this practice up to 24 months of age or more. These practices have proven to be effective in ensuring the health and survival of children, while providing undeniable cognitive and health benefits.
The Democratic Republic of Congo was recognized for the significant progress made in optimal breastfeeding, demonstrating the commitment of authorities and local stakeholders to promote this essential practice for the health of newborns.
The provincial Minister of Gender, Family and Children, Valérienne Mumba Kiboko, as well as other health figures, actively participated in this ceremony, demonstrating the importance of breastfeeding for the entire society.
