In a sad development that has rocked the town, a serious road accident occurred in the early hours of Friday morning. The incident was reported by Babatunde Akinbiyi, spokesperson for the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, known as TRACE.
The serious accident involved an Iveco truck with registration number KJA 166 XJ and a tricycle with registration number TRE 627 VP. According to information provided by Akinbiyi, the accident was caused by reckless driving by the driver of the truck.
The accident had tragic consequences, with the death of two persons, a woman and her granddaughter, who were the sole occupants of the tricycle at the time of the incident. The two victims lost their lives as the truck attempted to overtake the tricycle in transit to Abeokuta, at Papalanto. The truck dragged the tricycle to one side before it flipped and was crushed, killing the grandmother and granddaughter.
A witness to the scene reported that the truck driver fled the scene before being apprehended. The two victims were identified as the sole occupants of the tricycle at the time of the accident. The bodies were returned to their families, while the injured tricycle driver was taken to an undisclosed hospital by a passerby.
The vehicles involved in the accident have been moved to Itori Divisional Police Station. This tragic incident once again highlights the importance of road safety and careful driving to avoid such loss of lives.
