Fatshimetrie: Protecting the Congolese market against imports of dubious quality

Fatshimetrie: When protecting the Congolese market becomes a priority

Within the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Minister of Foreign Trade, Julien Paluku Kahonya, recently spoke at a press conference in Kinshasa to address a crucial issue: the use of the DRC as a “dumping ground” by certain countries in the region. This denunciation raises important questions about the quality of imported products and the need to protect the national market.

To counter this worrying situation, the Minister announced the construction of six ultra-modern laboratories, benefiting from international accreditation. These laboratories will play a key role in controlling the quality of imported products, thus ensuring their compliance with international standards. This initiative aims to protect Congolese consumers by offering them quality products and preventing the export of goods that are not locally consumable.

Julien Paluku Kahonya also stressed the importance of strengthening the Congolese Control Office (OCC), responsible for verifying the quality, quantity and conformity of imported products. This global strategy aims to make the DRC a country where lower quality products will no longer find their place.

Asked about products marked “for export only” that end up on the Congolese market, the minister was surprised by this practice. He questioned the reasons that push these products to be exported to the DRC, highlighting the need to ensure the quality of goods offered to Congolese consumers.

Ultimately, protecting the Congolese market is of crucial importance to guarantee the safety and satisfaction of local consumers. The measures taken by the Minister of Foreign Trade aim to ensure that the DRC is no longer exploited as a simple dumping ground for lower quality products, but as a market that respects international standards.
