An alarming case of Mpox in Kisangani: the urgency of coordinated action

The suspected case of Mpox in Kisangani in 2024 raises legitimate concerns in the Tshopo region, in the Democratic Republic of Congo. With thirteen suspected cases recorded, including four confirmed and one death already recorded, the health situation is alarming. These figures highlight the urgency of coordinated action to contain the spread of this viral disease.

The concentration of confirmed cases in the Kabondo health zone calls for reinforced surveillance and targeted preventive measures. Collaboration between health authorities, health professionals and international organizations is essential to put in place an effective response plan. The treatment of confirmed cases at the epidemic treatment center is a crucial step in managing this health crisis.

The lethality of 4.31% recorded in the Tshopo province is worrying, exceeding the national average. Doctor Philippe Libande warns of the dramatic nature of the situation and calls for increased awareness among the population. Personal protection measures such as hand washing, limiting physical contact with suspected cases and using condoms during sex are simple but essential actions to limit the spread of the disease.

The mobilization of a multisectoral team, bringing together experts in human, animal and environmental health, as well as local and international partners, is a positive step in the fight against Mpox. Despite the challenges faced, including the controversial CAMEKIS fire, the treatment remains accessible free of charge, highlighting the importance of ensuring quality care for all affected patients.

The Tshopo province ranks among the most affected in the DRC, highlighting the need for constant vigilance and a rapid response to this epidemic. The recommendations of Doctor Philippe Libande must be heard and followed by the population in order to limit the risks of contamination. Public health requires close collaboration between local and international actors to stem the spread of Mpox and prevent new cases in the region.
