Fatshimetrie, August 11, 2024 edition: A significant step forward for women’s representation has been made with the installation of local steering committees and permanent secretariats in the territories of Aru and Mahagi, in Ituri province, Democratic Republic of Congo. This initiative stems from capacity-building workshops for peace actors, aimed at implementing Resolution 1325 adopted in October 2000, which advocates the equitable participation of women in public bodies and conflict resolution processes.
Ituri province stands out for its commitment to implementing this resolution, with the establishment of a permanent provincial secretariat. Currently, the focus is on the installation of local committees and secretariats in the territories, chiefdoms, sectors and communes. In the city of Bunia, where the provincial institutions are located, these structures have already been established in the three communes, as well as in the territories of Irumu and Djugu, with 15 operational committees in the chiefdoms and sectors.
During these events, representatives of local authorities, civil society, international organizations and women’s associations were present, stressing the importance of this approach for peacebuilding and the promotion of gender equality. The advisor to the military governor in charge of Gender welcomed the progress made in the province of Ituri in the implementation of Resolution 1325.
In parallel, an awareness-raising mission on Resolution 1325 was conducted in Ariwara, mobilizing more than 200 people around this crucial issue. These actions demonstrate the commitment of local actors to strengthen the participation of women in the management of public affairs and conflict prevention, thus contributing to the construction of a more inclusive and peaceful society.
The establishment of these local committees and permanent secretariats is a significant step towards achieving gender equality and promoting peace in Ituri province. This exemplary approach deserves to be supported and encouraged, as it embodies the values of inclusion and diversity that are essential for building a more just and harmonious future for all.
