Within the Abakaliki community, a voice has been raised firmly and clearly to call to order those who, through malicious actions, seek to sabotage government contracts that are essential to local development. It was during a religious service at the Government House Chapel that Nwifuru issued this unequivocal warning.
He spoke emphatically to urge local union leaders and other key stakeholders in the community development process to closely monitor the proper implementation of projects in their respective areas in line with the specifications set by the authorities.
“If you are a coordinator or a local council chairman and you reside in Abakaliki and do not regularly visit the villages, do not expect people to follow you.
You must act in the interest of the people. Our youths need your attention.
So, as a coordinator, you should be doing projects of at least N10 million every month, and local council chairmen should be doing projects of at least N20 million every month,” he stressed.
The governor commended the exemplary attitude of the youths who chose not to join the nationwide protests. “They did not protest because we are providing satisfaction. They are encouraging us to do more. It is a challenge for us as government agents to outdo ourselves. In this emancipatory perspective, we do not reserve these opportunities for members of the State Executive Council, the Judiciary, local council chairmen and coordinators, we want the youths to take advantage of them.”
This statement raises critical questions about the accountability of governments to their constituents and the need for transparency in the management of development projects. Aware of the challenges to be met to ensure a prosperous future for the community, it is imperative that everyone plays their full role in promoting effective governance and serving the general interest.
Thus, everyone, whether they are a local elected official, a member of civil society or an engaged citizen, has a role to play in ensuring the smooth running of government actions and ensuring that they truly benefit the population. Only constant vigilance and collective commitment can guarantee harmonious and equitable development for all the inhabitants of Abakaliki.
