Fatshimetrie, August 9, 2024 – The scene was solemn and emotional this Friday in Kinshasa-Matete, where 304 new candidates were officially registered on the roll of the bar association. Under a scorching sun in the “Maman Marthe Kasalu” park, the Kinshasa Court of Appeal welcomed these future figures of the Congolese bar, called upon to defend justice and the rights of citizens.
In the midst of the attentive crowd, 52 established lawyers proudly renewed their oath, committing their careers to the service of the law and the truth. The Attorney General, Jean Norbert Ruvuzi, solemnly reminded the newcomers of the crucial importance of respecting the Constitution, the unshakeable pillar of any democratic society.
The president of the bar, Erick Massay, a respected figure in the profession, gave wise advice to the young people sworn in. With a voice marked by authority and benevolence, he reminded them of the vital importance of respecting the oath taken, and encouraged them to make ethics and discipline their allies in their daily practice. “Your professional life depends on it,” he stressed, inviting everyone to meditate on these words as a pillar of their commitment.
Respect for the order of precedence, restraint in comments on court decisions and courtesy towards colleagues were highlighted by Bar President Massay. These values, immutable and essential, are the cement of a noble and demanding profession, where ethics and integrity must guide every step.
Questioned at the end of the ceremony, Mr. Elie Mbali expressed his gratitude and determination to serve justice with honor and selflessness. “It is an honour to be sworn in today, after so much effort and sacrifice. I pledge to be a dedicated lawyer, serving the most vulnerable and the truth. My dream is to rise beyond borders, to become an international lawyer,” he said with a glimmer of hope in his eyes.
This swearing-in ceremony marked a new chapter in the legal history of the Democratic Republic of Congo, instilling a renewed commitment and dedication in these new members of the bar. They carry on their shoulders the hope and confidence of a society in search of justice and truth, and their oath resonates as a solemn commitment to defending the rights and freedoms of all.
