The representation of women in the government of the DRC: a step towards equality and empowerment

Fatshimetrie, 8 August 2024 – The representation of women in the government of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has received positive feedback from the UN-Women organization. During their recent meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Francophonie, the Resident Representative of UN-Women in the DRC, Adama Moussa, said he was honored by the government’s commitment to the presence of women in spheres of power.

With approximately 31% of women ministers, UN-Women welcomed this progress and congratulated the women promoted for their merit. Adama Moussa stressed the importance of having a critical mass of women in positions of authority in the DRC, saying that this contributes to better representation and the empowerment of women in the country.

UN Women has also expressed its willingness to support the DRC in its efforts to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment. Their Women, Peace and Security programme aims to give women a voice in peace processes, ensuring their representation and participation in negotiations to ensure inclusive and sustainable peace processes.

Furthermore, UN Women’s support extends to initiatives aimed at combating violence against women, particularly in the eastern regions of the DRC. Their commitment to promoting the implementation of Resolution 1325, which recognizes the essential role of women in conflict prevention and peacebuilding, illustrates the importance of their contribution to consolidating stability and security in the country.

In conclusion, the growing presence of women in the Congolese government is a significant step towards a more egalitarian and inclusive society. UN Women’s involvement in these efforts demonstrates the importance of supporting and strengthening the role of women in building a peaceful and prosperous future for the DRC.
