The M23 rebel movement has resurfaced in the Ituri region of the Democratic Republic of Congo, raising serious concerns among the population and local authorities. This rebel group, of Rwandan origin, is seeking to extend its influence by targeting key localities in this province under siege. The military authorities and the vital forces of Ituri are sounding the alarm about the M23’s intentions to establish itself on the shores of Lake Albert, on the border with Uganda.
According to information provided by Lieutenant Jules Ngongo, spokesman for the Military Governor of Ituri, the M23 is planning an alliance with the Zaire militia led by Thomas Lubanga, president of the Union of Congolese Patriots (UPC). This alliance aims to take control of Tchomia and Kasenyi, two strategic commercial localities in the territories of Djugu and Irumu. The recent attacks on the positions of the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo by the Zaire militia on July 31, 2024, raise fears of an escalation of violence and an attempt to destabilize the region.
Faced with this imminent threat, the inhabitants of Ituri are called to be vigilant and collaborate with the security forces to counter any attempt at infiltration or takeover by the rebels. The unity and solidarity of the population are essential to stand up to this external threat and preserve peace in the region.
Lieutenant General and Governor of Ituri, Johnny Luboya N’Kashama, brought together the commanders of the Congolese army units and MONUSCO forces to develop new strategies to restore peace and state authority in the province. The objective is clear: to prevent any advance by the M23 and maintain stability in the region.
It is essential for the people of Ituri to remain vigilant and united in the face of this persistent threat. The mobilization of all is necessary to counter the expansionist ambitions of the M23 and ensure the security and stability of the region. The future of Ituri depends on the determination and cooperation of all actors involved in preserving peace and security.
