Major renovation at Mbuji-Mayi airport: towards a large-scale modernization

Fatshimétrie, August 7, 2024 – The residents of Mbuji-Mayi, a city in the heart of Kasai Oriental in the Democratic Republic of Congo, will soon see major changes taking place at their national airport. Indeed, large-scale rehabilitation work will soon begin, directly impacting the operation of the airport.

The provincial director of the Régie des voies aérienne (RVA), Romain Tshinyama Kabongo, announced that the runway at Bipemba national airport will be closed for four days a week starting August 10. This closure is part of a major airport renovation project, which aims in particular to modernize the aeronautical pavement.

This rehabilitation work will last two and a half months and will consist of laying a new layer on the existing runway. The objective is to give Mbuji-Mayi airport a quality aeronautical infrastructure, capable of meeting international standards. This renovation will improve the safety and efficiency of airport operations, while providing travelers with increased comfort during their travels.

The provincial director of the RVA stressed that this cyclical closure and reopening of the airport will allow the work to be carried out while minimizing disruptions for users. Thus, Mbuji-Mayi airport will be open from Friday to Sunday, and closed from Monday to Thursday, for the duration of the work.

This renovation phase is in addition to other projects already underway to modernize Mbuji-Mayi airport. For over a year, transformation work has been undertaken with the aim of making this airport a modern and functional regional hub.

In short, this rehabilitation work marks an important step in the transformation of Mbuji-Mayi airport. Thanks to these efforts, the city will be able to benefit from quality airport infrastructure, promoting economic development and the region’s influence at the national and international levels.
