The humanitarian crisis in Manzasay, the capital of the Bagata sector, in the territory of the same name, highlights the devastating impact of armed conflicts on civilian populations. More than 5,200 displaced people, mostly women and children, are in an extremely precarious situation, having fled attacks by Mobondo militiamen who ravaged their villages.
Classrooms, usually symbols of learning and education, are now transformed into improvised reception areas for these displaced populations. It is a sad observation to see that children’s education is put on hold in favor of the immediate need to house and feed these victims of violence.
The administrator of the Bagata territory, Amédée Mbangambuma, warned of the alarming situation in which these displaced people find themselves. Living conditions are described as subhuman, endangering the health and safety of displaced persons, already traumatized by the events that forced them to flee their homes.
Faced with this emergency situation, the elected national deputy of Bagata, Garry Sakata, calls on the government to intervene quickly. He warns against the risk that these displaced persons will be left on the streets at the imminent start of the school year, stressing the urgency of finding rehousing solutions and humanitarian assistance for these vulnerable populations.
The most basic needs must be covered as a priority: mattresses to sleep on, food to eat, school books to ensure the continuity of education for displaced children. It is imperative to guarantee dignified conditions for these people in distress, by offering them the possibility of rebuilding a semblance of life after having lost everything in the violence that forced them to exodus.
The poignant story of these forgotten displaced people of Manzasay, heartbreaking witnesses to the ravages of war on innocent lives, calls for solidarity and collective action to protect the most vulnerable. It is our duty as a society not to look away from human suffering and to do everything we can to provide a better future for those who have been so severely tested by the horrors of violence.
