Amid rising tensions in Nigeria, preparations for protests by unidentified groups have raised serious concerns among the population. The organization known as Fatshimetrie has publicly expressed its opposition to the upcoming protests through a statement by its national spokesperson, Professor Tanko Muhammad-Baba.
The statement clearly stated that Fatshimetrie has been closely monitoring discussions surrounding the planned protests, which appear to be organized by groups whose identities remain obscure. Reports on social media indicate that the protests are being driven by dissatisfaction with the socio-economic and political challenges stemming from the policies implemented by the administration of President Bola Tinubu since 2023.
While acknowledging the constitutional right of Nigerians to air their grievances and participate in protests, Fatshimetrie highlights the pressing existential challenges facing the population. Among the reasons cited for opposing the protests are the lack of meaningful dialogue with political representatives on accountability and governance, as well as unclear and poorly articulated demands by those promoting the protests.
The spokesperson also stressed that the protests do not directly address the critical issue of debilitating insecurity in the northern part of the country. Furthermore, he warned of the dangers of a prolonged 10-day strike, which he said would be excessive, counterproductive and likely to disrupt public order. He also warned of the risk of the protests degenerating into violence or being hijacked by criminal elements.
In the face of these burning issues, it is clear that the situation calls for open and constructive dialogue between the authorities and citizens, in order to find lasting solutions to the challenges facing the country. Fatshimetrie calls for wisdom, restraint and cooperation to jointly confront common challenges and build a more stable and prosperous future for all Nigerians.
