In Kwango province, the humanitarian situation is alarming with the presence of 395 unaccompanied displaced children fleeing the violence caused by the Mobondo phenomenon. These young people, left to fend for themselves, were identified in the villages of Bukangalonzo, Pont Kwango, Kabuba and Batshongo, while they were trying to escape the confrontations shaking their region.
Faced with this crisis, the Kwango civil society consultation framework, supported by the provincial division of social affairs, carried out a situation assessment mission to understand the scale of the problem and implement concrete actions. It appeared that other displaced children are also in the surrounding villages, but remain inaccessible due to the threatening presence of Mobondo militiamen.
This situation requires an urgent and coordinated response from the authorities and humanitarian partners to help these children in distress. It is crucial to put in place effective mechanisms for the identification, family tracing, reunification and holistic care of unaccompanied children. This will not only meet their immediate needs, but also help them reunite with their families and rebuild their lives after the trauma they have experienced.
Lucien Lufutu, President of the Kwango Civil Society Consultation Framework, made an urgent appeal to the authorities for a rapid and effective intervention. It is essential that the authorities take concrete measures to ensure the safety and well-being of these displaced children, victims of the violence and insecurity that have reigned in the region for several months.
The situation in Kwango reflects the challenges facing many regions of the Democratic Republic of Congo due to armed conflict and widespread insecurity. It is imperative that durable solutions are put in place to ensure the protection of civilians, particularly children, and to promote peace and stability in the region.
It is time to act decisively to provide a better future for these displaced children in Kwango and to end the cycle of violence and suffering they endure. The international community cannot remain indifferent to their plight and must provide increased support to address this worsening humanitarian crisis.
