The creation of the “Julienne Lusenge” Prize marks a significant step in the recognition of the commitment to human rights in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Announced during the celebration of the United Nations Prize received by activist Julienne Lusenge, this new award aims to honor individuals and associations that stand out for their contribution to the promotion of human rights in the country.

In collaboration with the Ministry of Human Rights, the United Nations Joint Human Rights Office in the DRC has established this biennial award that will highlight the remarkable work carried out by those working to prevent gender-based violence, support survivors of such violence and rebuild their lives. This is an expected recognition for essential actions that aim to strengthen the dignity and rights of the most vulnerable individuals in Congolese society.

Julienne Lusenge, an emblematic figure in the fight for women’s rights in the DRC, expressed her satisfaction with the creation of this prize bearing her name. A tireless activist, she works tirelessly for the protection of women victims of violence, particularly in the provinces of North Kivu and Ituri, courageously denouncing the abuses committed against them. As executive director of the Congolese Women’s Fund and president of the NGO “Feminine Solidarity for Peace and Integral Development”, she embodies commitment and determination in the service of social justice and peace.

The “Julienne Lusenge” Prize is intended to pay tribute to the courageous women of the DRC who fight daily for their rights and dignity, despite the hardships and violence they suffer. It also highlights the importance of women’s participation in political processes and their crucial role in building a peaceful and inclusive society. By highlighting and rewarding these actions, this award helps to highlight the efforts of civil society actors engaged in promoting human rights in the DRC.

Beyond individual recognition, the “Julienne Lusenge” Prize demonstrates the collective desire to advance the cause of human rights in the DRC, by highlighting positive initiatives and good practices that contribute to building a more just and equitable society. By honoring those who are fully invested in this path, this award constitutes valuable encouragement and support for the consolidation of achievements and the extension of these actions to the entire country.

By rewarding exemplary commitment to human rights, the “Julienne Lusenge” Prize embodies the desire to promote a culture of respect, solidarity and justice in the DRC. It highlights the importance of valuing and supporting those who work for a better future, based on respect for the rights and dignity of each individual. May these inspiring actions continue to light the way towards a more just and united world for all.
