Zhiying Zeng, an inspiring 58-year-old Chilean table tennis player of Chinese descent, is finally realising her Olympic dream at Paris 2024. Despite a break of more than three decades in her sporting career, her story is a powerful example of perseverance and determination.
Born in 1966 in Foshan, southern China, Zhiying Zeng began playing table tennis at the age of nine, under the tutelage of her coach mother. She rose through the ranks quickly and turned professional at just 13, ranking third nationally at the age of 17. However, her life took an unexpected turn in 1989 when she decided to go to Chile to teach table tennis. Despite language challenges and unexpected life changes, she found her place in the South American country, getting married, raising her children and launching a business career.
After 30 years away from the sport, Zhiying Zeng rediscovered her passion for table tennis during the lockdown caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. She regained her fitness and technique, and quickly joined the Chilean national team. Her participation in the Pan American Games in Santiago in 2023, where she won the bronze medal, marked a decisive turning point in her career.
Today, ranked 151st in the world, Zhiying Zeng is preparing for her first Olympic Games in Paris. Despite her 58 years, she is not short of ambition and dreams of a medal. Her inspiring journey is closely followed by her fellow Chileans, who affectionately nicknamed her “Tía Tania”, and by her family in China, including her 92-year-old father, who enthusiastically supports her.
