Imminent election of the definitive bureau of the Senate in the Democratic Republic of Congo

Fatshimetrie, July 26, 2024 – The political news in the Democratic Republic of Congo is marked by the announcement of the date of the election of the definitive bureau of the Senate. Scheduled for Saturday, August 3, 2024, this election represents a crucial step in the country’s democratic process.

During a plenary session at the People’s Palace in Kinshasa, Pascal Kinduelo, president of the provisional bureau of the Senate, called for serenity and respect for established laws to guarantee the success of this election. He also sent his wishes of good luck to all candidates for the various positions.

The calendar operations for this election have been carefully planned. The submission of applications is scheduled for July 29, followed by the examination of applications by an ad hoc committee and the posting of the provisional list of successful candidates on July 30. July 31 will be devoted to the examination of appeals and the posting of the definitive list of successful candidates. August 2 will be reserved for the plenary session to hear the electoral campaign messages, while the fateful day, August 3, will see the holding of the plenary session for the election and installation of the definitive bureau.

The constitution of the definitive bureau of the Senate will have to take into account several criteria, in particular the political configuration within it, the representation of women and provinces, as well as the skills, experience, credibility and honorability of the candidates. An ad hoc committee will be responsible for verifying the compliance of each candidacy with the required criteria, in accordance with the internal regulations of the Senate.

It is also emphasized that the candidacies for the various positions of the definitive bureau of the Senate must be submitted by political parties, political groups and senators elected as independents, within 48 hours following the opening of the submission of candidacies. Each party or group will only be able to submit candidacies for the position assigned to its political family, thus ensuring balanced representation within the institution.

This election of the definitive bureau of the Senate is of crucial importance in the Congolese political landscape. It reflects the ongoing democratic development and the willingness of political actors to consolidate the institutions of the Democratic Republic of Congo. It remains to be hoped that this electoral process will take place in accordance with democratic principles and in a climate of transparency and fairness, to guarantee the legitimacy and representativeness of the future Senate office.
