World heritage conservation: a crucial issue for historical justice

The spectrum of World Heritage conservation transcends geographical and political boundaries to reach fundamental issues of preservation and historical justice. UNESCO, at its 46th session held in New Delhi, voted unanimously in favour of resolutions concerning the conservation of Palestinian sites inscribed on the List of World Heritage in Danger. These sites, such as the Old City of Jerusalem and its Walls, the Old City of Hebron, Palestine: Land of Olives and Vines, as well as the Cultural Landscape of South Jerusalem (Battir), represent unique treasures of Palestinian history and culture.

Egypt welcomed the adoption of these resolutions by UNESCO, stressing its commitment to the preservation of these precious sites. In a statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Egypt condemned Israeli violations in the West Bank, particularly in the Old City of Jerusalem, aimed at altering the status quo of the region. The call for Israel to end its illegal measures aimed at changing the current state of East Jerusalem has been heard loud and clear.

The integrity of these World Heritage sites is both a matter of collective responsibility and of respect for international agreements. UNESCO, as the body responsible for safeguarding the world’s cultural heritage, plays a crucial role in protecting these historic sites. The resolutions adopted highlight the importance of preserving the collective memory and cultural identity of Palestinians and all the communities that have shaped these places over the centuries.

In this era of globalization, where borders between nations are becoming blurred, the preservation of World Heritage has become a moral and political imperative. The collective memory of humanity lies in these vestiges of the past, witnesses to our common history. By recognizing the importance of these sites for the preservation of cultural diversity and collective memory, UNESCO is sending a strong message in favor of historical justice and respect for the cultural rights of peoples around the world.

In the face of current challenges in preserving World Heritage, it is imperative that the international community strengthen its cooperation to protect these cultural and historical treasures for future generations. By making a strong commitment to the conservation of these Palestinian sites, UNESCO and its Member States demonstrate their commitment to preserving cultural diversity and the shared humanity that unites them.
