Commitment of the youth of Ituri for lasting peace: the call for tolerance and vigilance

The national coordination of intercommunity youth in the Democratic Republic of Congo recently launched an urgent appeal to young people in the province of Ituri to actively engage in the promotion of constructive and peaceful discourse. This initiative aims to consolidate peace in a region heavily affected by armed conflicts since 2017.

During a workshop on peace organized in collaboration with the Political Affairs section of MONUSCO, more than a hundred representatives of different local communities, civil society and displaced people took part in the discussions. They were able to discuss the roots and impacts of hate speech which fuels tensions and weakens inter-community ties.

The experts present highlighted the harmful influence of social networks, which have become vectors of messages of manipulation and division. The young participants were thus made aware of the importance of vigilance and responsibility in the dissemination of information, called upon to adopt a more critical approach towards online content.

Tolerance has emerged as an essential pillar in building lasting peace. By advocating dialogue and rejecting hate speech, young people are committed to fighting identity conflicts and promoting harmony within their community. Love and compassion are presented as effective remedies to heal the wounds of dissension and contribute to reconciliation.

Beyond this individual commitment, the participants expressed the wish to see the authorities strengthen their presence and their authority throughout the provincial territory. This measure appears to be a key element for consolidating the social fabric and guaranteeing a climate of peace conducive to development.

In conclusion, this workshop helped to highlight the essential role of youth in the promotion of peace and tolerance in Ituri. By actively involving themselves in the construction of an inclusive and caring discourse, young people demonstrate their desire to contribute to building a more harmonious and prosperous future for their region.
