Fatshimetrie, Democratic Republic of Congo, July 19, 2024 – Social media is a favorite breeding ground for false information, and a recent rumor that the President of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo, intends to hand over power to his brother Jacques Tshisekedi due to health problems is currently circulating on the internet. However, after careful verification, it turns out that this information is a conspiracy fake news.
It should be noted that such a claim is unfounded. Indeed, on July 18, 2024, President Tshisekedi went to the national museum to pay tribute to the late Charles Bofasa Djema, former Minister of Sports of the Democratic Republic of Congo. This public presence formally denies the allegations about the president’s worrying state of health.
Furthermore, it is important to mention that the constitution of the Democratic Republic of Congo provides specific provisions in the event of a vacancy in power, whether due to death, resignation or permanent incapacity. According to article 75 of the constitution, in the event of a vacancy for one of these reasons, the presidential functions, with the exception of certain specific situations, are temporarily exercised by the president of the senate.
Thus, it is crucial to remain vigilant in the face of false information circulating on social networks and to verify the veracity of the information before sharing it. The spread of unfounded rumors can have harmful consequences on the stability and social cohesion of a country.
In these times when disinformation is commonplace, it is up to each of us to exercise discernment and responsibility in sharing information, in order to preserve the credibility of our media space and the proper functioning of our society.
Thus, vigilance and verification of sources are the key words to counter the spread of fake news and guarantee reliable and quality information to all citizens. Let’s remain critical, stay informed, and not let disinformation take precedence over the truth.
