Kinshasa strengthens its environmental policy: dissuasive fines for the protection of the urban environment
At the heart of current sustainable development issues is the crucial question of preserving our environment. As cities around the world face growing challenges in sanitation and nature protection, Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo, has just adopted radical measures to combat harmful behaviors for the urban ecosystem.
From now on, anyone caught throwing waste on public roads or mutilating trees will be liable to a fine of up to 50,000,000 Congolese francs. This decision, taken following a meeting between the Minister of Justice and Keeper of the Seals, Constant Mutamba, and the Minister Delegate in charge of urban policy, Didier Tenge Litho, aims to raise awareness among the population on the importance of preserving the environment and maintaining the cleanliness of common areas.
The legal arsenal put in place by the Congolese authorities is not limited to fines for violations noted. Indeed, Edict 005 of October 9, 2012 also penalizes noise pollution, with fines of up to 1,000,000 Congolese francs for repeat offenders, as well as penalties of penal servitude of up to 14 days. This firmness displayed by the government reflects a clear desire to protect the quality of life of citizens and guarantee a healthy environment for future generations.
Furthermore, Minister Didier Tenge Litho invites the population to play an active role in preserving the environment by reporting any violations observed to the competent authorities. Citizen collaboration is essential to guarantee the effectiveness of the measures taken and to ensure that everyone contributes to improving their living environment.

Through these new dissuasive measures, Kinshasa sends a strong message: everyone is responsible for preserving their daily environment, and any infraction will be punished.
