Finding your way after academic failures: the inspiring journey of young people from the Second Chance school in Ivory Coast

As part of my in-depth investigation into education in Côte d’Ivoire, I recently had the opportunity to meet two inspiring young people from the Second Chance School (E2C). Alexandra, a young woman of 24, and Laurès, aged 32, found their way in the construction sector after bouncing back following academic failures.

Alexandra, today a topographer on a construction site, shares her work with conviction: “With my machine, I carry out topographical surveys to determine the location of infrastructure such as roads and bridges”. Her journey shows the determination and perseverance she demonstrated to achieve her goal despite the obstacles encountered after her baccalaureate.

On the other hand, Laurès drives a hydraulic excavator on the same construction site. His initial dream of being an airplane pilot transformed into a passion for construction machinery. After a period of uncertainty and failure in his studies, he found his way thanks to E2C. “I went from being an excavator driver to dreaming of becoming a machine trainer. My ambition has evolved, but I really enjoy the work I do now,” he confides.

Since its creation in 2023, E2n has helped 28,000 young Ivorians find a professional path in various fields such as mass distribution, construction and agriculture. This program from the Ministry of Technical Education offers a second chance to those who have experienced academic difficulties, by training them and supporting them towards careers of the future.

This success story of young people who were able to bounce back after academic failures demonstrates the relevance and positive impact of E2C in Côte d’Ivoire. Indeed, beyond the figures, it is essential to underline the importance of perseverance, motivation and support to enable everyone to find their place in society and to flourish professionally.

Thus, the Second Chance school perfectly embodies the notion of social and professional inclusion by offering concrete opportunities to young people seeking retraining or professional reorientation. These inspiring testimonies from Alexandra and Laurès only reinforce the belief that, with the right resources and support, everyone has the opportunity to bounce back and succeed despite the obstacles encountered on their path.
