Fatshimetrie recently highlighted an innovative initiative aimed at meeting the food needs of orphans in Kinshasa. Indeed, the NGO Farms for Orphans (FFO) launched a weevil breeding project, also known as “Mpose”, whose production reached around 3,000 kg during the first half of this year.
This project, carried out under the supervision of biologist Jonathan Mukendi, enabled the monthly production of 300 to 500 kg of weevils. This approach demonstrates an innovative approach aimed at offering an alternative source of proteins, in particular for orphanages, while considering the commercialization of these edible insects.
Françoise Lukadi, president of the NGO FFO, underlined the importance of this activity which aims to meet the nutritional needs of vulnerable populations. Thanks to this initiative, orphans will be able to benefit from a source of protein rich in vitamins, fiber and minerals, thus offering a healthy alternative to meat consumption.
Weevil breeding takes place at the University of Kinshasa (UNIKIN), where in-depth research is carried out to optimize the breeding conditions of these insects. Indeed, the efforts made aim to reproduce the natural diet of weevils using cereal waste and other plants, in order to guarantee their optimal development.
Madame Jeannette, head of the “Lisanga ya Kristu” orphanage, expressed her satisfaction with this initiative, highlighting the positive impact that Mpose weevils have had on the diet of the children cared for by her organization. By offering a sustainable and balanced solution in terms of nutrition, the NGO FFO contributes significantly to improving the living conditions of orphans in Kinshasa and opens new perspectives in terms of food security.
Ultimately, Mpose weevil breeding represents a promising and exemplary initiative that combines innovation, sustainability and social responsibility. Its positive impact on the health and well-being of orphans makes it a model to follow in the fight against malnutrition and food insecurity, thus paving the way for new approaches to respond to current challenges in terms of food and sustainable development.
