The report of the United Nations experts on the aggression against the Democratic Republic of Congo by Rwanda, transmitted to the President of the Security Council on May 31, has sparked strong reactions within the Congolese government. In a press release issued this Thursday, July 11, 2024, the Congolese authorities expressed their deep concern at the evidence of Rwanda’s involvement in this conflict situation.

According to the Congolese government, the report highlights damning evidence demonstrating that nearly 4,000 Rwandan soldiers are involved in aggressive operations in the Democratic Republic of Congo, outnumbering the members of the M23 rebel group. In addition, the report clearly establishes that the Rwandan army exercises control over this movement of aggression, even using minor children and individuals forcibly recruited in occupied areas as well as in refugee camps in Rwanda and Uganda.

In the face of these revelations, the Congolese government calls on the international community to take firm measures against Rwanda and its leaders. It stresses that Rwandan troops operating in the DRC are deliberately targeting MONUSCO peacekeepers and the UN mission’s infrastructure, which constitutes unacceptable war crimes.

This situation raises major concerns about the stability of the Great Lakes region and the protection of civilian populations. The Congolese authorities therefore urge civilized nations and the international community to act without delay to put an end to this aggression and to bring to justice those responsible for these violent acts.

The urgency of the situation cannot be overemphasized and it is imperative that concrete measures be taken to protect the civilian population and ensure peace and stability in the region. The United Nations report highlights the gravity of the situation and calls for collective and decisive action to address this challenge in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
