The reality of begging in the Democratic Republic of Congo is a worrying phenomenon that continues to increase over the years. On the main arteries of large cities like Kinshasa, Goma and Bunia, the number of beggars looking for charity continues to increase. Men, women and even children, of all ages, hold out their hands in the hope of obtaining a few coins to meet their basic needs.
What was once seen as occasional help has become a real profession for some. Begging has become professionalized, and some individuals have made this practice their main means of livelihood. At bus stops, we often see young adults, aged between 25 and 35, who have specialized in what Kinshasa residents call “matolo”.
Faced with this glaring reality, the main question that arises is: how to eradicate this scourge of Congolese society? To provide lasting solutions to this problem, it is essential to understand the root causes that push these individuals to beg. Certain factors such as poverty, unemployment, the absence of adequate social programs and armed conflicts in certain regions of the country contribute to perpetuating this alarming situation.
To effectively combat begging in the DRC, it is necessary to put in place inclusive social policies aimed at reducing poverty and providing economic opportunities to the most vulnerable populations. It is also crucial to invest in education and vocational training to enable young people to build a better future.
At the same time, it is essential to raise awareness among the population about the harmful consequences of begging, both on an individual and societal level. Solidarity and mutual assistance must be encouraged, but in a responsible and constructive manner, in order to avoid the perpetuation of a system of dependence and stigmatization of people in precarious situations.
Ultimately, the eradication of begging in the Democratic Republic of Congo requires a global approach, integrating structural, social and educational measures. It is by acting in a concerted and united manner that Congolese society will be able to face this major challenge and offer everyone the opportunity to live with dignity and respect.
