The Kinshasa sports community is preparing to pay tribute to a former emblematic player of DC Motema Pembe, Henri Merikani Djamba Simisi, better known by the affectionate nickname “Zembe”. His death deeply affected football fans and members of the Congolese sports family. Born on June 6, 1956 in Mushie, in the province of Mai-Ndombe, Henri Merikani Djamba Simisi marked the history of Congolese football with his talent and determination on the field.
During his career, Zembe shone as a striker for DC Motema Pembe, working alongside his brother, goalkeeper Godys Merikani Mpangi. Together, they proudly represented the colors of the green and white club of Kinshasa. Before joining DC Motema Pembe, Henri Merikani Djamba Simisi had already proven himself as one of the best center forwards in the Entente provinciale de football de Kinshasa (Epfkin) championship at FC Kalamu (FCK) of AC Matonge.
His sporting career has been marked by exceptional performances and an unwavering passion for football. His liveliness, technique and sense of the game have made him an essential player on Congolese football fields. Off the field, Zembe was appreciated for his generosity, his kindness and his commitment to young sports people.
The news of his death, which occurred on Friday June 28, 2024 following a long illness, aroused deep emotion within the football community. To pay him a final tribute, a series of events is planned, including a wake at the Kamina field in Yolo-Nord, followed by the lifting of the body to the morgue of the Mabanga hospital in Yolo-sud and its burial at the Necropolis Between earth and sky in the commune of Nsele, on July 13.
