The resilience of La Kinoise des Poissons: challenges and hopes of fish farming in Kinshasa

The fish farming and aquaculture sector is struggling to fully blossom in the Kinshasa region in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Despite this, some visionaries dare to embark on this adventure to meet a strong demand for fresh fish in urban areas. A major player in this dynamic is the La Kinoise des Poissons fish farm, having started its activities in the commune of Maluku since 2000.

Initially created with the aim of diversifying the supply of fresh fish for the inhabitants of Kinshasa, La Kinoise des Poissons quickly stood out for its commitment to local and quality production. This commitment also extended to the student community, particularly to finalists from the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences. Indeed, the farm has set up educational programs and practical internships to allow students to acquire concrete experience in the field of fish farming, thus promoting their professional integration and contributing to the development of local skills.

However, these last few months have been difficult for La Kinoise des Poissons, faced with a serious obstacle: the silting of 12 of its ponds, resulting from the cutting of the wastewater discharge channel coming from the water treatment center of the REGIDESO of the municipality of Maluku. This situation has had a significant impact on the farm’s production capacity, jeopardizing its operation and economic viability. Faced with this challenge, urgent measures are necessary to remove sand from the ponds and restore the damaged infrastructure, in order to allow La Kinoise des Poissons to fully resume its activities and continue to provide quality fresh fish to the population.

In conclusion, the La Kinoise fish farm embodies both the hopes and the challenges of the development of fish farming in Kinshasa. Despite the difficulties encountered, it remains an inspiring example of resilience and commitment to local and sustainable production. It is essential to support and promote such initiatives to promote the emergence of a viable and prosperous fish farming sector, meeting the needs of consumers while contributing to the socio-economic development of the region.
