During the celebration of the 248th anniversary of the independence of the United States, the United States Ambassador to the DRC, Lucy Tamlyn, spoke to highlight the progress made in strengthening ties between the two countries over of the past year. She focused in particular on the United States’ commitments to the Democratic Republic of Congo, highlighting common challenges such as promoting peace in the east of the country, plagued by persistent insecurity.
The American diplomat recalled the importance of peace as a starting point for resolving the multiple conflicts in eastern DRC. She underlined the commitment of the United States to use its diplomatic resources to promote dialogue and support the Luanda process, aimed at bringing stability to the region. Additionally, she highlighted the United States’ continued commitment to providing lifesaving humanitarian assistance to the millions of displaced people in the DRC, in keeping with the values of generosity of its people.
The security situation in the DRC has recently deteriorated with the capture of several localities by armed groups, including some which were previously spared from conflict. This escalation of violence has led to the massive displacement of populations already weakened by previous conflicts.
To ease tensions, the Luanda process provides for several crucial steps, such as the cessation of hostilities and the withdrawal of rebel groups from occupied areas. In addition, it aims to end all political and military support for these armed groups, while facilitating the return of displaced populations to their homes.
The celebration of the independence of the United States highlighted the theme of good environmental management, inspired by the success of the Congo Basin Conclave. This theme highlights the United States’ commitment to supporting the DRC in key areas such as health, environmental protection, governance and the economy.
As the DRC’s largest bilateral donor, the United States remains committed to supporting the Congolese people in their development, by investing in essential sectors such as agriculture and education. This collaboration aims to stimulate economic growth, while strengthening local capacities and promoting the well-being of Congolese citizens.
