The humanitarian emergency in North Kivu: displaced people facing the advances of the M23

In the latest report on the situation in the North Kivu province of the Democratic Republic of Congo, the advance of the M23 rebels, supported by Rwanda, continues to fuel negotiations and international concerns. After the recent capture of the town of Kanyabayonga, the rebels are now advancing northwards, on a strategic axis leading to Butembo, another major city in the region.

The new front line, extending between the villages of Kasehe and Matembe, raises serious concerns about the stability of the region. The clashes between the M23 and the Congolese army, supported by local armed groups, have led to a massive influx of displaced persons, creating a critical humanitarian situation. The population of the commune of Lubero, located along this road axis, has doubled in a few days under the influx of civilians fleeing the fighting.

These displaced people, forced to live in precarious conditions, express their distress by begging for food and seeking refuge with residents of surrounding towns. The situation is all the more alarming as the lack of humanitarian assistance is worsening the precariousness of the displaced people. Reports of looting by rebels, particularly at the Kanyabayonga health center, only serve to increase the fear and instability that reign in the region.

The recent crossing of the threshold of 7 million internally displaced people in the DRC underlines the scale of the humanitarian crisis in the country. This staggering figure places the DRC second in the world in terms of internal displacement, just behind Sudan. The humanitarian needs are colossal and continue to grow, putting a strain on the resources of aid agencies and humanitarian actors on the ground.

Faced with this alarming situation, the international community is once again called upon to act in a coordinated and effective manner to protect vulnerable populations and prevent further clashes. The stability of the Great Lakes region remains a major concern for regional peace and security, and will require concerted efforts to achieve a peaceful and lasting resolution of the conflicts in the DRC.
