July 2, 2024 will be remembered as a key date for the Democratic Republic of Congo, as Prime Minister Judith Suminwa and the distinguished First Lady Denise Nyakeru Tshisekedi met at the Prime Minister’s Office for a most important working session. At the heart of their discussions, crucial subjects such as government support for the “Excellentia” program of the Denise Nyakeru Tshisekedi Foundation (FDNT) and the care of people suffering from sickle cell anemia.
The commitment of the wife of the Head of State to these noble causes does not go unnoticed. Indeed, the First Lady recalled during this meeting the importance of her pleas and hopes for a favorable response from the Prime Minister in the days to come. Her fight for the inclusion of women in positions of responsibility has already borne fruit, with a greater presence of women within the current government.
Joël Makubikwa, coordinator of the Denise Nyakeru Tshisekedi Foundation, highlighted the positive impact of the advocacy on sickle cell disease led by the First Lady. While progress has been made, particularly with the rehabilitation of the “Mabanga Yolo” center, the fight against this genetic disease which affects part of the Congolese population requires greater involvement from the government.
The working session also allowed us to discuss the importance of supporting the FDNT’s “Excellentia” program, which offers scholarships to local and international students. With already 313 beneficiaries in five years, this program plays an essential role in promoting education and academic excellence in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Surrounded by the Ministers of Health, Scientific Research, Higher and University Education, and National Education, the First Lady and the Prime Minister took stock of the progress of the various advocacy efforts. These include the fight against sickle cell anemia, improving the conditions of women and girls, as well as the deployment of female troops to combat sexual violence in conflict zones.
This meeting highlights the importance of collaboration between the highest authorities of the country and the organizations involved in the field to improve the living conditions of the population. By demonstrating a common desire to promote health, education and gender equality, Judith Suminwa and Denise Nyakeru Tshisekedi set an example of enlightened and committed leadership for a better future in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
